R1162Ancient agate more than 1200 yrs !!
This example boasts an Ottoman Empire eye agate which dates to c.1100 AD. Throughout history, eye agates were considered to act as protection against the "evil eye," and this banded agate displays a wonderful surface as well as a rich, brown "eye" encircled by a band of white! JUST CUNNING!
The eye agate measures 14mm x 10mm, and is mounted in a rubbed-over, closed-back collet. The patina on this stone is satin-like, and shows wear consistent with its 900-year-old history. Best of all, is completely intact, without cracks or damage! The ring mounting features spiral motifs on the top, bottom and shoulders. It is a size 8 1/2, but the rear of the shank would allow for easy re-sizing by a good lapidary for little cost. Weighing in at a stupendous 10.15 grams, this signet-like ring is certain to get noticed, and is also very comfortable on the hand. It retains 90% of its high-karat fire gilding after 135 years of careful wear, and what a history!
If you love the best in antique Grand Tour jewelry, this ring belongs on your hand and in your collection!
In many cultures the belief in the evil eye encouraged the wearing of amulets to ward off malevolent influences, and what could better than the “eye-agate” to look evil straight in the face. This stone combines myth, folklore and natural beauty in a handsome ring that will always be “eye-catching”
